Also known as: cannabidiol, CBD oil
CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive compound from hemp, sold mainly as an oil in various strengths (e.g. 5, 10 or 15%). Prescription CBD has evidence in some rare forms of epilepsy, but for everyday supplements for stress and sleep the evidence is weak.
lower strength, good to start with
higher amount per drop – dose carefully
also contains other cannabinoids and traces of THC
CBD only, no THC
In the evening or as the label says; hold the oil under the tongue before swallowing.
A meal with fat improves absorption; good sleep hygiene.
Do not combine with alcohol, sedatives or sleeping medicines. Take care when driving after use.
Not suitable in pregnancy or breastfeeding. CBD affects liver enzymes that break down many medicines (e.g. anticoagulants, antiepileptics, antidepressants) – if you take any medicines or have liver disease, consult your doctor. Full-spectrum products may cause a positive drug test.
EFSA has not yet confirmed the safety of CBD as a food; at higher doses it may strain the liver. Do not exceed the label dose.
Choose products with a batch-specific lab certificate (CBD and THC content).
Strong = several good human studies or official recommendations; moderate = promising but smaller studies; weak = few studies or mixed results; no evidence = claims not confirmed.
