Horny goat weed (Epimedium)

Also known as: epimedium, icariin

Epimedium is a traditional Chinese medicine herb whose main active compound is icariin. It is sold mainly for libido and erection support, but human evidence is limited.

What it is used for

  • libido and erectile function – weak evidence, mostly lab studies (mild PDE5 inhibition)
  • bone density after menopause – weak evidence from small studies

Forms and how they differ

extract standardised to icariin

most comparable form; 10–60% content per label

non-standardised extract

icariin content unknown

When to take it

With a meal, usually once a day.

Pairs well with

A healthy lifestyle; often combined with maca.

Do not combine / separate

Do not combine with erectile dysfunction drugs or blood pressure medicines without asking your doctor.

Watch out for

Be careful with heart disease, rhythm disorders, low blood pressure and hormone-sensitive conditions. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, with kidney or liver disease, or when taking medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

Dizziness, palpitations and irritability have been reported at high doses. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip
