Beta-alanine

Also known as: β-alanine

Beta-alanine is an amino acid muscles use to make carnosine, which buffers acid build-up during intense exercise. The effect appears only after several weeks of regular use.

What it is used for

  • Better performance in intense efforts lasting about 1–4 minutes – strong evidence
  • Delayed fatigue in interval training – moderate evidence
  • Benefit in short explosive efforts under 1 minute – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

powder

cheapest, common in pre-workout blends

CarnoSyn

label for a patented beta-alanine raw material

sustained-release tablets

less tingling, easy dose splitting

When to take it

Daily, split into smaller doses with meals; timing around training does not matter much.

Pairs well with

Creatine, carbohydrates with meals.

Do not combine / separate

Avoid a large single dose – it increases tingling.

Watch out for

Harmless skin tingling (paraesthesia) is common. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have kidney or liver disease or take any medicines.

Safety

Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

Reduce tingling by splitting the daily dose or using sustained-release tablets.
