Amylopectin

Also known as: highly branched starch, waxy maize

Amylopectin is the branched part of starch; in sports products it is a specially processed high-molecular-weight starch (e.g. from waxy maize or barley). It has low osmolality, so some people tolerate it better in the stomach during exercise.

What it is used for

  • energy during endurance exercise – moderate evidence for carbohydrates, advantage over maltodextrin is unclear
  • glycogen replenishment after training – moderate evidence
  • better stomach tolerance – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

highly branched starch

low osmolality, neutral taste

waxy maize

cheaper alternative, properties vary with processing

When to take it

Before, during or after long or intense training.

Pairs well with

Electrolytes, protein after training, creatine.

Do not combine / separate

Do not expect miracles over cheaper maltodextrin – total carbohydrate amount matters most.

Watch out for

With diabetes, prediabetes or insulin resistance, consult your doctor. In pregnancy or with liver or kidney disease, a doctor's advice is recommended.

Safety

A common food ingredient; the main risk is excess calories. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

Test it in training, not for the first time on race day.
