Marshmallow root

Also known as: Althaea officinalis

Marshmallow root is rich in mucilage that forms a protective layer on mucous membranes. The European Medicines Agency recognises its traditional use for dry cough, throat irritation and mild stomach complaints.

What it is used for

  • dry irritating cough and sore throat – weak evidence, traditional use recognised by the EMA
  • mild stomach complaints – weak evidence, traditional use

Forms and how they differ

cold root infusion

mucilage is released best in cold water

syrup

practical for coughs

When to take it

Between meals; for coughs several times a day.

Pairs well with

Slippery elm, thyme for coughs.

Do not combine / separate

Take medicines at least 1–2 hours apart – the mucilage may slow their absorption.

Watch out for

With diabetes watch the sugar in syrups. A cough lasting more than a week or with fever should be checked by a doctor. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, with kidney or liver disease, or when taking medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

Generally very well tolerated. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

Cover the root with cold water and let it stand for 1–2 hours – the infusion is gentler and more mucilaginous than a decoction.
