Lutein

Also known as: lutein and zeaxanthin, meso-zeaxanthin, eye carotenoids

Lutein and zeaxanthin are yellow carotenoids from leafy greens and egg yolk that accumulate in the macula of the retina. They filter blue light and protect the eye from oxidative damage.

What it is used for

  • Slower progression of advanced age-related macular degeneration – moderate evidence (as part of the combination from the large AREDS2 trial)
  • Higher macular pigment density – moderate evidence
  • Contrast sensitivity and eye fatigue – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

lutein (from marigold flowers)

the most common source

lutein + zeaxanthin

a combination matching the retina's composition

meso-zeaxanthin

the third macular carotenoid, less data

eye complexes

often with zinc, vitamins C and E, quality depends on the label

When to take it

With a meal containing fat, once a day, long term.

Pairs well with

Leafy greens, eggs, omega-3 fatty acids.

Do not combine / separate

No significant interactions are known; smokers should avoid eye complexes containing beta-carotene.

Watch out for

In pregnancy, with kidney or liver disease and when taking medicines, consult your doctor. A supplement does not replace eye check-ups.

Safety

Do not exceed the label dose. High doses can harmlessly turn the skin yellowish.

Practical tip

A handful of spinach or kale a day provides lutein together with other compounds tablets lack.
