Lactase

Also known as: lactase enzyme, dairy enzymes

Lactase is an enzyme that breaks down milk sugar (lactose) into glucose and galactose. People with lactose intolerance do not produce enough of it in their own gut.

What it is used for

  • better lactose digestion in lactose intolerance – strong evidence (EFSA-approved claim when taken with a lactose-containing meal)
  • less bloating and diarrhoea after dairy – strong evidence in lactose-intolerant people

Forms and how they differ

tablets / capsules

dose in FCC units; more units for more lactose

drops

added to milk in advance

chewable tablets

handy for travel

When to take it

Just before or with the first bite of a lactose-containing meal.

Pairs well with

Dairy foods; for a long meal you can split the dose.

Do not combine / separate

No need to avoid other supplements; the enzyme does not help with milk protein allergy.

Watch out for

Lactose intolerance is not the same as milk allergy – lactase does not help with an allergy. With unclear digestive problems consult your doctor.

Safety

Considered very safe. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

Hard aged cheeses and kefir are low in lactose – you may tolerate them without the enzyme.
