Glucose support complex

Also known as: blood sugar support, glucose blend

Glucose support complexes combine several ingredients, typically chromium, cinnamon, gymnema, berberine, alpha-lipoic acid, magnesium or bitter melon. Quality and effectiveness depend on the specific ingredients and doses stated on the label.

What it is used for

  • Maintenance of normal blood glucose – chromium has an EFSA-approved claim, other ingredients weak to moderate evidence
  • Reduced sugar cravings (gymnema) – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

chromium

the only ingredient with an EFSA-approved blood-glucose claim

berberine

the best evidence among the plant ingredients, but interacts with medicines

cinnamon, gymnema, bitter melon

weak evidence, doses in blends tend to be low

alpha-lipoic acid, magnesium

supporting ingredients

When to take it

With food as per the label, often split across main meals.

Pairs well with

A low glycaemic-load diet, a walk after meals, sleep.

Do not combine / separate

Be careful with diabetes medicines (combined effects may lower glucose too much); do not combine with other supplements containing the same ingredients.

Watch out for

In pregnancy, while breastfeeding, with diabetes, kidney or liver disease and when taking medicines, consult your doctor. A complex does not replace diabetes treatment.

Safety

Do not exceed the label dose; check that the total chromium and berberine from several products is not too high.

Practical tip

Compare the dose of each ingredient with the doses used in studies – blends often contain only trace amounts.
