Also known as: chitosan fibre
Chitosan is a fibre obtained mostly from crustacean shells (or from fungi) that binds part of dietary fat in the gut. EFSA approved a claim that chitosan contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol at an intake of 3 g per day; its effect on weight loss is small.
most common; unsuitable if allergic to seafood
suitable for vegetarians and people with shellfish allergy
chromium has its own claim for blood sugar, not weight loss
Shortly before or with a fattier meal, with plenty of water.
A diet lower in saturated fat, other fibre and physical activity.
Keep at least 2–4 hours between chitosan and medicines, fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and omega-3.
Do not use if allergic to shellfish (unless fungal chitosan), or during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you take warfarin or other medicines, or have kidney or liver disease, consult your doctor.
Do not exceed the label dose; it can cause constipation and bloating, and long-term use may reduce absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
For cholesterol support, follow 3 g daily split across meals – the smaller doses in typical capsules do not match the EFSA claim.
Strong = several good human studies or official recommendations; moderate = promising but smaller studies; weak = few studies or mixed results; no evidence = claims not confirmed.
