NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide)

Also known as: β-NMN, NAD+ precursor

NMN is a molecule the body uses to make NAD+ – a coenzyme needed for energy production in mitochondria and for cellular repair. NAD+ levels decline with age, which is why NMN is one of the best-known longevity and biohacking supplements.

What it is used for

  • Raising blood NAD+ levels – well shown in small human clinical studies
  • Insulin sensitivity and metabolic health – first small studies, mixed results
  • Physical performance and vitality in older adults – weak evidence from short studies
  • Slowing ageing in humans – not proven yet; most evidence comes from animal studies

Forms and how they differ

capsules 250–500 mg

most common form, easy dosing

powder

cheaper, sensitive to moisture and heat – store cool

liposomal NMN

marketed as better absorbed; direct human comparisons are lacking

sublingual tablets

dissolve under the tongue; no proven advantage over capsules

When to take it

In the morning, ideally fasting or with breakfast; not recommended in the evening as some people feel more energised.

Pairs well with

Often combined with trimethylglycine (TMG) as a methyl donor and with resveratrol; these combinations are theoretical and little tested in studies.

Do not combine / separate

Do not stack several NAD+ precursors (NMN + NR + high-dose niacin) without reason – you only increase the total dose.

Watch out for

Pregnancy and breastfeeding, cancer (fast-growing cells also use NAD+), diabetes medication – consult your doctor before use.

Safety

Safe in short studies (up to ~3 months, 250–1,200 mg daily); long-term safety is unknown. In the EU, NMN is not authorised as a novel food, so its sale as a food supplement is legally disputed. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

Before paying for NMN, start with the basics that demonstrably support NAD+: regular exercise, good sleep, less alcohol and enough protein.
