Respiratory complex

Also known as: airway complex, respiratory support blend

Respiratory complexes typically combine N-acetylcysteine (NAC), vitamin C, zinc, vitamin D, and extracts of ivy, thyme, ribwort plantain, marshmallow, elderberry or quercetin. Their effect and quality depend on the composition and doses on the label; liposomal forms are said to improve absorption, but independent evidence is limited.

What it is used for

  • contribute to normal immune function (vitamins C, D, zinc) – EFSA-approved claims for individual ingredients
  • loosening mucus with cough (ivy, thyme, NAC) – weak to moderate evidence for individual ingredients
  • effect of the blends themselves – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

blends with NAC

check mg of NAC per dose

herbal blends (ivy, thyme, plantain)

look for standardised extracts

liposomal liquid forms

marketed for better absorption, independent evidence is lacking

'proprietary' blends without doses

impossible to judge how much of each they contain

When to take it

With food, as on the label; short term for acute symptoms.

Pairs well with

Enough fluids, humid air, rest, not smoking.

Do not combine / separate

Do not combine with other zinc, vitamin D or NAC products without checking total doses; do not combine NAC with nitroglycerin without asking your doctor.

Watch out for

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, with asthma (NAC can trigger bronchospasm in some people), kidney or liver disease, or if you take medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

Do not exceed the label dose; for individual vitamins and minerals, track total intake from all supplements.

Practical tip

With breathlessness, a fever lasting more than 3 days or a cough lasting over 3 weeks, see a doctor.
