Joint complex

Also known as: joint support blend, joint formula

Joint complexes combine several ingredients, typically glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, collagen or gelatine, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and sometimes curcumin or boswellia. Quality depends on the specific ingredients and their doses on the label.

What it is used for

  • Joint pain relief – weak evidence for blends, individual ingredients weak to moderate
  • Support for collagen formation (vitamin C) – EFSA-approved claim for vitamin C

Forms and how they differ

glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM

the classic base, quality depends on the dose

collagen / gelatine

common in gels and powders

curcumin, boswellia

anti-inflammatory plant ingredients, check standardisation

vitamin C, manganese

supporting ingredients with EFSA claims

When to take it

With food, daily and long term; assess after 2–3 months.

Pairs well with

Regular exercise, strength training, losing excess weight.

Do not combine / separate

Be careful with anticoagulants (glucosamine, chondroitin, curcumin); do not take other products with the same ingredients at the same time.

Watch out for

With shellfish allergy check the source of glucosamine. In pregnancy, with kidney or liver disease, diabetes and when taking medicines (especially anticoagulants), consult your doctor.

Safety

Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

Compare the doses in the complex with the doses of the individual ingredients used in studies – blends are often underdosed.
