Butyrate

Also known as: butyric acid, sodium / calcium-magnesium butyrate, tributyrin

Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid normally produced by gut bacteria from fibre, and the main energy source for colon cells. As a supplement it is studied for irritable bowel and inflammatory bowel disease.

What it is used for

  • support of the gut lining and barrier – weak evidence in humans, most data from lab and animal studies
  • irritable bowel complaints – weak evidence from small studies

Forms and how they differ

sodium / calcium / magnesium butyrate

salts, often in enteric-coated or microencapsulated capsules

tributyrin

a gradually released form with less odour

prebiotic fibre

the indirect route – bacteria make butyrate themselves

When to take it

With a meal.

Pairs well with

Resistant starch, inulin and varied fibre that boost your own butyrate production.

Do not combine / separate

With the sodium form, watch your total sodium intake if you have high blood pressure.

Watch out for

With inflammatory bowel disease use only after consulting your doctor. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, with kidney or liver disease, or when taking medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

Generally well tolerated; may have an unpleasant smell. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

The cheapest way to raise butyrate is eating legumes, oats and cooled potatoes or rice.
