Saccharomyces boulardii

Also known as: probiotic yeast, S. boulardii

Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast which, unlike bacteria, is not sensitive to antibiotics. It is one of the best-studied probiotics, especially for preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhoea.

What it is used for

  • preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhoea – moderate to strong evidence from meta-analyses
  • traveller's and acute diarrhoea – moderate evidence
  • add-on to H. pylori treatment (fewer side effects) – moderate evidence

Forms and how they differ

freeze-dried capsules

stable at room temperature; dose in billions of cells

sachets for children

contents can be mixed into a drink, not a hot one

combination with MOS (mannan-oligosaccharides)

a prebiotic addition – quality depends on the label

When to take it

During antibiotics and for 1–2 weeks after; it can be taken at the same time as the antibiotic.

Pairs well with

Probiotic bacteria (lactobacilli, bifidobacteria), fibre.

Do not combine / separate

Do not take together with antifungal medicines – they kill the yeast.

Watch out for

Not suitable with weakened immunity, a central venous catheter or in critically ill people – there is a rare risk of yeast bloodstream infection. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, with kidney or liver disease, or when taking medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

Very safe in healthy people; occasional bloating. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

Do not stir the capsule contents into hot drinks – heat kills the yeast.
