MCT oil

Also known as: medium-chain triglycerides

MCTs are shorter-chain fats (mainly C8 and C10) that are absorbed quickly and readily converted to ketones in the liver. They are mostly used on ketogenic diets as a fast energy source.

What it is used for

  • Raising ketones on low-carb diets – moderate evidence
  • Modest satiety and weight-loss support – weak evidence, effect is small
  • Better focus – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

C8 (caprylic acid)

raises ketones fastest, more expensive

C8/C10 blend

common and more affordable

powder

MCT on a carrier (e.g. acacia), gentler on the stomach, contains other ingredients

When to take it

Morning in coffee, a smoothie or food; start small and build up.

Pairs well with

Low-carb diet, coffee.

Do not combine / separate

Do not use for frying; low smoke point.

Watch out for

Can cause diarrhoea and cramps at higher doses. Caution with liver disease and diabetes. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have kidney or liver disease or take any medicines.

Safety

Do not exceed the label dose; it is still an energy-dense fat.

Practical tip

Start with one teaspoon and increase only after a few days to avoid digestive upset.
