Manuka honey

Also known as: Leptospermum scoparium honey

Manuka honey comes from New Zealand and Australia and contains methylglyoxal (MGO), which is credited with antibacterial activity. The best evidence is for topical use on wounds; benefits when taken by mouth are poorly proven.

What it is used for

  • easing cough during colds – weak to moderate evidence (applies to honey in general)
  • wound healing with topical use – moderate evidence for medical-grade honey products
  • digestive and immune support when taken orally – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

honey labelled MGO or UMF

a higher number means more methylglyoxal; check the label declaration

drops and blends (e.g. with shilajit)

the manuka content is often small; quality depends on the label

When to take it

Any time, e.g. a spoonful on its own or in a warm (not hot) drink.

Pairs well with

Warm tea, lemon, ginger.

Do not combine / separate

Do not add to boiling drinks; do not treat it as a substitute for treating an infection.

Watch out for

Never give to infants under 1 year (risk of botulism). With diabetes, count its sugar content. Take care with pollen or bee product allergy; if you take medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

It is a high-sugar food; do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

Manuka honey is expensive and often counterfeited – buy only with a verifiable MGO/UMF grade.
