Thyroid support complex

Also known as: thyroid support blend

These are blends of nutrients and herbs aimed at the thyroid – typically iodine (often from kelp), selenium, zinc, L-tyrosine and sometimes ashwagandha or guggul. Composition varies widely, so quality and suitability depend on the label.

What it is used for

  • normal thyroid function in iodine or selenium deficiency – moderate evidence for the nutrients themselves (EFSA claims), weak for blends
  • energy and metabolism – weak evidence without a deficiency

Forms and how they differ

iodine (potassium iodide / kelp)

kelp has variable iodine content

selenium (selenomethionine)

supports hormone conversion

L-tyrosine

a hormone building block, unnecessary with adequate protein

herbal additions

ashwagandha and guggul may affect hormone levels

When to take it

In the morning with food.

Pairs well with

A diet with iodised salt, fish and eggs.

Do not combine / separate

Keep at least a 4-hour gap from levothyroxine; do not combine with other iodine or selenium supplements without adding up the total.

Watch out for

With thyroid disease (Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Graves' disease, nodules) or thyroid hormone treatment, use only after consulting your doctor – excess iodine can worsen the condition. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, with kidney or liver disease, or when taking medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

The EFSA tolerable upper levels are 600 µg a day for iodine and 255 µg a day for selenium from all sources. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

Have your TSH and thyroid hormones checked first – a supplement does not replace diagnosis.
