Fadogia agrestis

Also known as: Nigerian shrub

Fadogia agrestis is an African shrub whose stem is traditionally used as an aphrodisiac. It is sold as a testosterone booster, but the data come almost entirely from rat studies.

What it is used for

  • raising testosterone – no evidence in humans, animal studies only
  • libido – no evidence in humans

Forms and how they differ

10:1 extract

stem concentrate; no standardisation to an active compound

combined boosters

often with tongkat ali or zinc – quality depends on the label

When to take it

If used, with a meal; manufacturers suggest short cycles with breaks.

Pairs well with

The basics are sleep, strength training and adequate vitamin D and zinc.

Do not combine / separate

Do not combine with other hormonal boosters or hormone therapy.

Watch out for

Animal studies suggested possible testicular toxicity. Not suitable during pregnancy, breastfeeding, with liver or kidney disease, when trying to conceive or when taking medicines – consult your doctor.

Safety

Safety in humans is not established. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

If you suspect low testosterone, start with a blood test and lifestyle changes, not an unproven extract.
