Group: Glazing agents · in the book

Harm level1 of 5No concern

In plain words

Beeswax is a natural wax made by bees that gives foods shine and protects their surface from drying out. You find it on sweets, jelly candies, fruit, some cheese rinds and supplement coatings.

Where you find it: fruit (surface), confectionery, cheese

Our recommendation

No need to avoid it; care only if you are allergic to bee products.

Possible risks and effects

  • No relevant risk known at normal intake.
  • People allergic to bee products (e.g. propolis) should be careful.
  • Not vegan.

For experts

A mixture of esters of fatty acids and long-chain alcohols, hydrocarbons and free acids, used as a glazing agent and carrier. It is barely absorbed; EFSA saw no safety concern at permitted uses.
