Licorice

Also known as: DGL, deglycyrrhizinated licorice, Glycyrrhiza glabra

Licorice is the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra, which contains glycyrrhizin. The DGL form has the glycyrrhizin removed and is mainly used to soothe the stomach and oesophageal lining.

What it is used for

  • Heartburn and an irritated stomach (DGL) – weak evidence
  • Soothing the throat and cough – traditional use

Forms and how they differ

DGL (deglycyrrhizinated)

glycyrrhizin-free, chewable tablets, safer for longer use

standard extract with glycyrrhizin

can raise blood pressure and lower potassium

When to take it

Chew DGL 20 minutes before meals.

Pairs well with

Dietary changes for reflux, smaller evening meals.

Do not combine / separate

Long-term use of the glycyrrhizin-containing form.

Watch out for

The glycyrrhizin form is unsuitable in pregnancy, high blood pressure, heart, kidney or liver disease and low potassium. If you take medicines for blood pressure, diuretics, heart medicines or corticosteroids, consult your doctor.

Safety

For glycyrrhizin, an intake of up to 100 mg per day was advised in the EU; for DGL, do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

If you have higher blood pressure, choose DGL only and check the label.
