Gentian

Also known as: gentian root, Gentiana lutea

Yellow gentian is one of the bitterest medicinal plants; its root contains bitter compounds that reflexively stimulate saliva, stomach juices and bile. It is traditionally used for poor appetite and a feeling of fullness.

What it is used for

  • poor appetite and heaviness after meals – weak evidence, traditional use recognised by the European Medicines Agency
  • bloating – weak evidence
