Schisandra

Also known as: Schisandra chinensis, five-flavour berry

Schisandra is a vine whose berries ("five-flavour fruit") are used as an adaptogen in traditional Chinese and Russian medicine. It contains lignans (schisandrins), studied mainly for effects on the liver.

What it is used for

  • coping with stress and fatigue – weak evidence from smaller studies
  • liver support – weak evidence, mostly lab and animal data
  • endurance and focus – weak evidence

Watch out for

Not suitable in pregnancy or breastfeeding. With epilepsy, reflux, ulcers, liver disease or when taking medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

Practical tip

Take it in courses, for example 6–8 weeks followed by a break.
