Caprylic acid

Also known as: octanoic acid, C8

Caprylic acid is a medium-chain fatty acid found in coconut and palm kernel oil. It acts against yeasts in the lab, but proven effects in humans are few.

What it is used for

  • Intestinal yeast (Candida) overgrowth – weak, mostly laboratory evidence
  • Digestion and bloating – no reliable evidence
  • Source of quick energy (MCT) – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

caprylic acid capsules

often as calcium or magnesium salt, enteric-coated

C8 MCT oil

contains caprylic acid triglycerides, used more as an energy source

When to take it

With food; increase the dose gradually.

Pairs well with

Often combined with dietary changes and probiotics (taken apart).

Do not combine / separate

Take probiotics a few hours apart.

Watch out for

Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding due to lack of data. If you have liver or kidney disease, diabetes or take medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

May cause digestive upset and diarrhoea. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

If you suspect a yeast infection, have it confirmed by a doctor first – the supplement does not replace treatment.
