Sugar-Free Electrolyte Lemonade
A refreshing homemade lemonade with lemon, a pinch of salt and mineral water – for hot days, after exercise or the sauna, with no sugar or artificial sweeteners.
Method
Squeeze the lemons and lime and strain the juice.
Dissolve the salt in a small amount of water (about 100 ml).
Slice the cucumber thinly and the ginger into rounds.
Gently bruise the mint leaves in a jug with a spoon to release their aroma.
Add the cucumber, ginger, citrus juice and salted water and top up with the rest of the mineral water.
Stir, add ice and chill for 10 minutes; add more water if it is too sour.
When you sweat heavily you lose sodium and other minerals as well as water, so a pinch of salt and mineral water make more sense than plain water or sugary sports drinks. Citrus adds flavour and vitamin C without added sugar.
If you have high blood pressure or limit salt for medical reasons, leave the salt out or ask your doctor. To take it with you, prepare it in a glass bottle the evening before.
